RIPOSTO: IN THE PROVINCE OF CATANIA

Lying on the sea and leaning towards infinity. This is the impression you get when you see Riposto from one of the foothills: lying on the sea and stretched out towards the horizon, with its pier that seems to tell the story, tracing time and events. The story of Riposto is the story of men, not of friezes, nor of noble coats of arms. It is a story of men, sailors and traders, strenuous and united in fighting and affirming their identity; it is a story of daring on the sea and in trade and it is recent history. The first settlements, in the current site of Riposto, are to be traced back to the Calcidians of Naxos, as reported by Strabo at the beginning of the Christian era; Riposto, then followed in the Roman and Byzantine periods, the vicissitudes of the ancient Mascali and characterized itself from the XII sec. in then like point of export and dock very famous. In 1750 Riposto was already a thriving shopping center.
